I don't know much about the upcoming sci-fi comedy, Space Station 76, except that it is directed by Jack Plotnik, stars Liv Tyler (whom I adore) and Patrick Wilson, and that it's currently doing the film festival rounds. Well, I also know that it apparently takes place in the future as it was depicted back in the ‘70s, with Old School sets, costumes, effects, moustaches and feathered hair... which is why I'm mentioning it here on Space: 1970 at all!
So far, the movie's getting reasonably good reviews online and I'm looking forward to catching it on Netflix one of these days. Obviously, I love the 70's sci-fi aesthetic (duh!) and am curious to see how well the filmmakers pull it off. If anyone's seen this movie already, please feel free to share your impressions in the comments.
I am definitely willing to give this a shot even if it is just to enjoy the nostalgic 70
ReplyDeletes sci-fi aesthetic. If it has a great story and sense of humor, even better.
I haven't heard to this movie, but I'm definitely going to make an effort to see it. I love the look of it from the still you posted.

Hope this movie works. Then we can have Liv Tyler as a Space Babe. Dave M
ReplyDeleteI like the Tomy Omnibot in the poster.
ReplyDeleteWow, the poster and still look great! I can't wait to see it, I hope a DVD is in the works.
ReplyDeleteThanks for bringing this movie attention. I love the 70's early 80's space look and I didn't even know about this. I can't wait to see it. This site is great! I was born in 77 and most of my interests surround this time period for sci fi and fantasy. Great Stuff!
ReplyDeleteI found out about this film a few weeks back now and am getting updates via their Facebook page.....i'm really looking forward to seeing it!
ReplyDeleteI hope it's not some Will Farrell style affair that mocks the source material.
ReplyDeleteThe background of the pic you posted defintely has a Moonbase Alpha look to it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me about this. Looks cool... I hope it becomes more widely available/distributed eventually.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't about this movie, but something similar. There is a new documentary called "Jodorowsky's 'Dune'" about another movie planned in the 1970s but never made.

I saw the movie yesterday and .... it's so-so. It's not a broad comedy, rather the tone is quite slow and subdued. Liv Tyler is excellent and all of the actors are convincing. I wish the sole robot character (Dr Bot) had been better realised as he has some of the best lines.
ReplyDeleteThe space station itself is astonishingly 70s right down to the wallpaper in the family quarters. It's a shame that all of the exterior shots seem to be CGI rather than model shots as they don't quite fit with the aesthetic of the interiors.
I enjoyed it but wouldn't give it any more than 7.6 out of 10.
7.6... maybe that's what they were shooting for? Just ordered the DVD.
DeleteI loved this movie. It was like a 70's psycho drama mash--up with Space:1999. Very offbeat.
ReplyDeleteI was disappointed. For whatever reason, I was expecting over-the-top silliness. Instead, this was a mashup of 70s-claustrophobic-desperation-in-suburbia with just the aesthetics of 70s sci-fi; I loathe the former and was looking forward to a more warm-hearted rendering of the latter. Barely a comedy, and of the darkest kind at that.
