BUCK ROGERS Comic Art By Mel Crawford

Here's the original cover painting for Western Publishing/Gold Key Comics' Buck Rogers In The 25th Century #2, the first issue of their 1979 series adapting the NBC television series (Western had published a Buck one-shot back in 1964, hence the numbering). The painting is by versatile commercial illustrator and fine artist, Mel Crawford. The talented Crawford did countless comics covers for Dell and Western and is especially well-regarded for his children's book illustrations.

  1. The first 6 or 7 issues of this series (including the 1964 first issue) were just released last week in a hardcover collection. It arrived over the weekend. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but am looking forward to spending an afternoon doing so soon. As much of a huge Buck Rogers TV series fan as I was, I somehow never knew about this comic when it was out originally.

  2. My train of thought:

    1) "Wow, Buck looks a lot like Pete Rose."

    2) "Y'know, Gil Gerard looks a lot like Pete Rose..."

    3) "... And you never see Gil Gerard and Pete Rose in the same place????"
